Our first ever Capitol Day was a success. We were able to visit with so many of our legislators. We informed them of the issues guardians in Michigan are facing and explained how they can support us. We need to keep the momentum going and are asking for your help.
Please follow the directions below and send emails out to your local legislators. Help us remind Lansing that it is imperative that there is another increase so we can continue helping the vulnerable constituents of Michigan.
Our many thanks in advance for your assistance.

I write to you today on behalf of the MICHIGAN GUARDIANSHIP ASSOCIATION to request your help in preventing a public health crisis in the State of Michigan. Michigan guardianship businesses are closing at an alarming rate, with an average of 15 closing in each of the last 10 years. Statewide there are less than 160 public guardians still surviving. Public guardians are often the last available option for Probate Judges to appoint in order to serve those in need of protection and care. If we go away, there will be no other options for the Judges and the state would need to create a safety net from scratch.
The main reason for over 50 percent of public guardians leaving the field in the last decade is due to the low, or in some client cases, no reimbursement for our services. Currently our monthly reimbursement rate for Medicaid patients is $83 per month. This rate has only been raised once since 1995 and has not kept up with the rate of inflation and the cost of doing business. With this low reimbursement rate, our members are having a hard time making ends meet and it is increasingly more difficult to provide our services for those who need it the most.
We are asking for an increase in our rate to bring the monthly fee up to $106 which is still well below our estimated breakeven point, but is a step in the right direction. The DHHS Appropriations bill as passed by the House includes a .1 cent increase in our rate in order to create a point of difference to keep the conversation going.
If we were to receive the full $23.00 increase it would impact the General Fund by less than $1 million dollars. We hope that the conference committee will provide a much needed increase and throw a life line to our members.
Please let your colleagues on the Appropriations Committee know that you support giving an increase to Michigan’s public guardians.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
